Steel Creek, located on the south bank of the Fortymile River, 38 miles south of Eagle, had a post office active from 1907-1951. Also boasted a US Marshall, ferry boat, general store, and a roadhouse. IT was established in 1897. In 1935 there was a population of 15 inhabitants, 7 of which were gold miners. Miners worked nearby mining claims and came to Steel Creek for supplies. Through the years one mining claim has been the scene of numerous unsettling events to prospectors, hikers, and adventurers. One winter, a couple decided to spend the winter near Steel Creek in a cabin. Their stay was shortened when they could hears someone walking outside the cabin, crunching across the crisp frozen landscape, but could not be seen. Someone would walk out through the woods, come up to the door step and stop at the front door. Upon examination, no one was there. Tracks were found one time that led out through the woods then ended into thin air. One other occasion someone could be heard walking around at night through the trees and around the cabin during the summer months. No one has ever materialized into a ghostly image, only sounds.
