In 1973, three crewmen on the state ferry Malaspina observed a ghost ship they say resembled accounts of the Flying Dutchman. On an early, clear Sunday morning the chief mate and two sailors, one at the lookout and one at the helm, were standing watch on the bridge. As the ferry moved toward Ketchikan they came near Twin Island and Revillagigedo Channel and suddenly saw a huge gray vessel look about eight miles ahead, broadside and head in the water. For about ten minutes the sailors watched the gray ghost ship and observed it as being exact, natural and real. With binoculars they observed sailors moving around on board. Suddenly the mysterious ship disappeared.
